Highmount trailers are the more conventional style of trailer that can be pulled with a typical tractor having a 5th wheel mounted on the tractor frame or chassis. A stinger set up is much lower to the ground and must have a headramp with a low mounted 5th wheel to make the connection.
The purpose of the sliding 5th wheel and sliding kingpin is to allow for a more generous turning radius when you get into a tight spot. They accomplish this in two different ways. On the sliding 5th wheel set up, the 5th wheel slides approximately 16”. ON the sliding kingpin set up, the kingpin does the sliding. The kingpin can be set in three different locations. All the way closed, in the middle, or all the way open.
Because different tractor OEMS can vary on their set back front axle dimensions, we do not work in wheelbases. The standard dimension we require is from the front bumper to the center of the rear drive axle. We typically require said dimension to be 308”. (However that can vary as well so contact your sales representative if you want to make sure you have the correct required dimension for your brand of truck.
