Cottrell Company History

Quality car hauler trailers: The beginning

Cottrell has a long history of merging quality fabrication with innovative design to produce the most respected car hauler trailers in the industry. It started in 1975 when a small manufacturing facility was converted for the design and manufacture of over-the-road car hauling trailers. Company founders proceeded to turn their talent and interest in engineering and design into a successful, efficient manufacturing operation.

Since the company’s inception, the Cottrell team has continued to perfect and expand their manufacturing capabilities, and have become the number one auto transport equipment manufacturing company in the world.

Our car hauler facilities: Then and now

The initial Cottrell car hauler manufacturing operation was housed in a small building in downtown Gainesville, Georgia. The company started with four employees, but within five short years the company roster soared to 215 employees. In 1979, operations moved to the 140-acre site the company operates from today. Currently, eight buildings house the production and paint facilities as well as a sixteen-bay modification and detail shop, and the corporate offices.

While the address has remained the same since 1979, Cottrell’s facilities have drastically changed. The new Cottrell facilities have dramatically changed the manufacturing process. Cottrell now uses in-house laser cutting equipment and robotic welders along with CNC drills, lathes, and saws to ensure the quality and efficiency of its production.

Our state-of-the-art paint booths are some of the largest and most advanced in the country. We utilize electrostatic paint application for superior coverage, and a high temperature bake oven for the best possible gloss and durability.

Today’s car hauler manufacturing capabilities

Today, Cottrell has the capacity to produce 10 trailers a day, or 2,500 trailers annually. With approximately 500 employees, we are the number one manufacturer and marketer of over-the-road car haulers in the world. We have a strong presence with all of the major fleet carriers in North America, and have supplemented that core significantly with strong dealer and independent sales, as well as export sales to Mexico, Canada, South America, Australia, and South Africa. In addition to new equipment sales, Cottrell provides complete service and major refurbishment capabilities at our full service on-site repair facility.

We are proud of our company’s heritage, and we plan to continue leading the way in the car hauler market. Our customer focused philosophy allows us to continuously exceed customer expectations.
